Disclaimer: I believe that all ships are valid. The cool thing about textual analysis is that if you can find evidence in the text to support your argument, you’re right! Go you! All of my thoughts below are about my personal headcanons and not intended to yuck anybody’s yum.
One of the reasons that I’m not as invested in some of the more popular gk ships is because I’m really invested in those relationships as friendships? The show doesn’t hold many things as sacred, but one of the only, if not the only, thing is presents as sacred is the bonds between the guys. And friendship can be such an underappreciated relationship. Sometimes the people who are your soul mates in the truest sense of the words are also people who you don’t want to sleep with, or you do, but you could never live with, or you could but you want vastly different things out of life. And that is sometimes okay and sometimes bittersweet, but mostly it’s good.
I want there to be more representations of really physical, affectionate friendships in media. Especially between dudes. I want Qtip and Christeson to goof around and throw their arms around each other and snuggle well into middle age, completely platonically.
And Brad and Ray? They adore each other; they are clearly each other’s favorite people. They show off for each other, and they can be truly themselves and not bother with politeness or other expected social niceties that neither of them has patience for. I want that relationship to be a solid, known thing, not the hard, treacherous, rocky thing that long term committed relationships can be.
Incidentally, I think this is why I ship Brad and Nate so hard. Because they aren’t friends. They understand each other on a deep instinctual level, but without the shared stress of working together, they will fall away from each other. The only way that understanding sustains is if they are driven by chemistry to make it work despite all the reasons not to.
Honestly, I think this is why I ship Brad/Ray less than Brad/Nate. Brad and Ray are really close friends and I like that relationship a ton. Brad and Nate are different.
