It wasnât uncommon for the guys to room together, but usually one would take the bed, and the other the floor. Since Carwood was roomed with Ron, he figured that the higher ranking officer would take the bed, but Ron refused to let Carwood sleep on the floor.
âI donât mind if you donât.â Ron says, eyes bright and inviting. Carwood bites his lip, before shrugging and nodding his head. Ron smiles happily, pulling his jacket off. Carwood turns away, undressing himself as well for bed.
Sometimes I just randomly remember the fact that Speirs actually shot a sergeant in the head from Dog Company, and killed him because he wasnât following orders.
And the CO, Captain Gross, got killed from enemy shrapnel before Speirs could be reprimanded for it.
Interview with Marv Bethea, Ron Speirsâ stepson, in A Company of Heroes by Marcus Brotherton.
To note, multiple veterans (including Winters, Guarnere, and Malarkey) have said the entire regiment was ordered by top brass not to take any prisoners. Â Therefore if Germans surrendered, they were to be killed. Â Partly because they were in no position to drag prisoners along, but also because Hitler had standing orders to shoot all paratroopers on sight. Â Many men on D-Day found fellow paratroopers mutilated and displayed by the Germans.
The drunk Sgt incident was also corroborated by Art DiMarzio, who was Dog Company, and was right next to Speirs and said idiot Sgt when the whole thing went down. Â Speirs wrote to Winters:Â âThe sergeant, by the way, was a replacement. The platoon saw it happen without batting an eye.â
