- Leckie and Sledge lying in bed and holding hands and sometimes tenderly cupping each other’s cheeks
- sitting on their couch in the evenings, listening to the news on the radio, enjoying a hot beverage, one resting his head in other’s lap while he plays with his hair
- making cheesy jokes and being caught off guard by their own laughter
- reading books together in the living room and occasionally saying “listen to this…” and reading out lines or images they particularly love
- making dinner together, and being so familiar with their space and each other’s presence that they weave through the kitchen effortlessly as they work
- tying each other’s ties and brushing a lock of hair so it lays just so
- lying in the grass on a hot evening in Alabama and talking in drowsy voices as the sun goes down
- going on a road trip in an Oldsmobile 98, driving with the top down in the sun, wearing sunglasses, passenger staring at the driver and feeling inexplicably fond and grateful for being here, with him
- making out in said car on summer nights under the stars
please and thank you
From beginning to end
“I am the harvest of man’s stupidity. I am the fruit of the holocaust. I prayed like you to survive, but look at me now. It is over for us who are dead, but you must struggle, and will carry the memories all your life. People back home will wonder why you can’t forget.”
Eugene B. Sledge
