– What the fuck is going on here?

– How would it look if that tank was operational?

– Well, I’ll tell you what it looks like right now. It resembles an incompetent moron climbing up the asshole of his company commander by inventing a bullshit mission.

I just read something about how dry humor is the most intimate form of humor because it’s so specific- it draws you in by implying that you and the joker are the only ones who truly “get it.”

And then I got sad about Nate wandering around the desert smiling wry smiles and making dry jokes mostly to himself

Let’s be real: “It is a smoldering heap of twisted metal and failed hopes in the trustworthiness of the Iraqis we are striving so hard to liberate” is a joke Nate makes mostly for his own amusement. Lovell isn’t included in the laugh-to-keep-from-crying moment – he just wants the facts. Nate is the only one who benefits from phrasing it like that.

There’s always another reason to be sad about Nate.

Also, I don’t think it is a coincidence that the two people with whom Nate shares dry smiles (Wynn and Brad) are also the only two with whom he shares moments of doubt about their mission and its effectiveness.

(“We sit here with our nuts exposed, but when RCT one assaults over the bridge…we get our nuts blown completely off” is 100% a joke for Brad’s benefit.)
