Waking up to find this fandom once more shredding itself, right. What else is new. And tbh., this is why I’m not going and actively calling myself a member of the anti-anti or pro-shipper ‘community’, because look what’s happening the moment you cross the line that the big names there find unacceptable. It’s all not quite as deranged as in the anti community, but I’m not all that surprised either. It’s simply that their line isn’t fic about rape, but fic about another trauma.

Like, maybe I’m just not getting it, in which case do point it out to me, but:

a) XYZ historical event shouldn’t be written about (like this) in fanfic because it’s in poor taste and there were so many victims, they and their descendants are rightfully upset if you do this and you should listen to them.

b) Rape shouldn’t be written about (like this) in fanfic because it’s in poor taste and there are so many victims, they are rightfully upset if you do this and you should listen to them.

One is valid, the other is not. One is ‘this is so insensitive to real trauma and real people!’ and the other is ‘well it’s just fiction, they didn’t write about you personally, let people write in peace, don’t like don’t read, blacklist the content and move on, curate your fandom experience!’

???

I’m just confused about the inconsistency. I’ll gladly have it explained to me.

I wouldn’t hold my breath for anyone of the fandom popo to come up with an explanation that is in any way valid.

I’ve actually wondered about this for a long time.

Historical fiction isn’t one of my favorite genres, so you don’t have to worry about me writing it, but I’ve always been puzzled because

Famous dystopian novels like 1984 are basically “so this isn’t *exactly* The Soviets Won AU, it’s England Went Sovietish”

And like… why would it be acceptable to write about the horrors of life under Ingsoc, it being TOTALLY OBVIOUS what Ingsoc is, but not to set your novel in “the USSR won the Cold War and everyone was oppressed and it sucked balls?”

It seems to me that the people who want to write fic, fannish or original, about “the Axis/Confederacy/horror of the moment won” can just get around your taboo by saying “no, this is spec fic, his name’s not Mao, it’s… uh… Oam. Yeah.”

I don’t object to fic about historical events, especially since I do like historical fiction and non-fiction, but I think the problem that comes up is that some people can write about delicate situations both badly and offensively.

I can’t find a link to it, but I remember hearing about a Supernatural Beauty and the Beast AU that had the beastly character be a slave owner in his past and some of his slaves dying was what presaged his transformation. It was, from what I recall, not well handled at all and way too blithe about the slavery aspect.

Again, I don’t think people should just not write about historical events, it just takes more effort to avoid things like that.

Tonight’s darkness is a different kind, and the love Rust has for Marty
is a different kind of affection from the love he found in the
revelation of death. That love was like slipping into a warm saltwater
pool—buoyant, pure, and infinite. This love with Marty has a heartbeat.
Not so much in the sense that it will stop one day, but in that it’s a
big part of what keeps him alive.

the boys are back in town, this time with old married couple smut. written for @hieroglyphicsqiosang based on this post. enjoy!

“That ain’t as easy as it used to be,” Marty says,
sounding a little winded but grinning all the same. He sits up
straighter in the saddle and tips his head to one side, striking a pose
like some bedazzled cowpoke on the front of an old-timey postcard. “How
do I look?”

“Like John fuckin’ Wayne,” Rust says, keeping his
features held straight even as Marty splutters out a laugh and looks
away. “A real American wild man.”

extract from the the Pacific Vietnam AU that is actually underway and i’m excited to post soonish:

“Eugene.” Burgin said, ignoring the honk of the taxi
driver.

His left hand still gripped the steering wheel tightly,
fingers flexing with a fear they’d never seen him carry before.

“You really ready t’die for your country?” He asked.

Sledge’s eyes flickered to the collar of his pale shirt,
to his worn jeans. His belt buckle, anything but those eyes and their piercing
stare.

“A’course.” He lied.

Burgin’s hand didn’t let go.

“You ready t’kill for it?” He asked.

@all-of-the-ships-are-sailing @spoondragon This reminded me of Eugene, which led to thinking about Snafu and knitting, of all things (behind a cut to be polite).

@desertdrift are you trying to destroy me?? This is the most adorable headcanon of all time and I cannot handle it. The image of Snaf knitting is frankly incapacitating. And Eugene would DEF rock a sweater vest, especially one of Snaf’s making. The only question I have is which one of you is gonna make me some art of this shit??

“If the others could see you now,” Eugene laughs, placing down a fresh cup of steaming coffee on the small table next to Snafu’s chair.

Snafu doesn’t look up from his own hands, concentration grained hard into his expression, fingertips red from hours spent wrapping and pulling wool tight around the needles. “Y’ain’t gonna be sayin’ that when ya slippin’ it over ya head on a cold day.”

“An’ who says I’m gonna wear it?” Eugene asks, sipping his tea smugly.

Snafu still doesn’t look up, nor does he miss a beat. “You’re wearin’ the last one I made right now.”

Eugene glances down at the lightly patterned sweater covering his own torso and purses his lips with a defeated hum.

Songbird (The Pacific, team Leckie)

leckied-archive:

Send me ‘Songbird’ and I will put my music on shuffle and come up with an AU based on the first song I hear

I started out with New Orleans by Parachute, and that then kinda turned into a Melbourne AU, which then became more of a Leckie/Hoosier thing. It does have hints of Runner and Chuckler, and I’m well aware it’s messy (especially for taking me so long) but I hope it’s okay to read anyway!!

Read it on AO3 here!!
