your assigned pokemon kin
your age + the day you were born x the month you were born
the total is your pokedex number
mine is Marowak
Experiencing brutal cold for a period of time every year keeps you humble
That’s why Californians are like that
Time to plastic over the windows for the season.
????? Why??????????
You put the plastic on the windows to stop the heat from leaking out of your house from between the panes, through the glass itself, and where the window is attatched to the rest of the house. This does make a drastic difference in the temeprature of your house and the amount of gas/electricity needed to keep it warm.
Some other Winter Things:
- If you think there’s going to be an exceptionally deep freeze, you open up all the cabinets in the house to warm the air in there and keep the pipes from freezing/bursting.
- If you’re going to be away for a while in winter, it’s adviseable to turn your water off to avoid the same.
- Putting an electric Blanket between your topcover and bedsheet and pre-heating your bed for half an hour so you don’t get a chill going to bed.
- Applying literal vasaline to your lips if you’re going to be in the cold for an extended time (more than 10-20 min, depending on latitude), becuase chapstick won’t cut it and your lips will split and bleed and HURT
- Doing the same to your nose
- Your tears go from liquid to gooey trying to produce a similar protection for your eyes. You can also feel the water freeze on your eyes if you step directly out into the cold.
- Also since I know you’re a socal person- in the far north you can get as little as eight hours of daylight. 7AM to 3 PM. You need to by the most obnoxiously bright light possible and sit beside it or you will actually literally develop psychosis in some cases. It’s 4:30 and you need to take the dog out? it’s pitch black out.
- Everything is covered in ice, which will alternately cause you to slip and break something, burn, or actually tear off your skin.
- Christmas and the pressure to be jolly is much stronger in places with Winter. Get your Holly Jolly On In this Frozen Black Hellscape!!! It’s why people go real bananas on the holiday lights. they’re trying to stave off the void.
To add to the ice example: Everyone suddenly starts waddling like penguins, because that’s the only way to safely walk on icy sufaces.
Also, can confirm that pitch darkness at 4-4:30 sucks.
The thing about knitting is it’s much harder to fear the existential futility of all your actions while you’re doing it.
Like ok, sure, sometimes it’s hard to believe you’ve made any positive impact on the world. But it’s pretty easy to believe you’ve made a sock. Look at it. There it is. Put it on, now your foot’s warm.
Checkmate, nihilism.
I know I just reblogged this, but I thought about something to add: This is true of so many things. Everything we do that’s creative at all is a stand against entropy. . You probably can’t fix the world, but you might be able to mend a sweater, or fix a broken toy, or hell, make your bed. And any creative action is a spark of light against the void. it doesn’t have to be the best thing ever, it can be a doodle on the side of a receipt, it can be a cup of tea – but it’s something done, something made, something fixed. Nothing else in the world may be better form the tiny thing you’ve done, but the tiny thing still exists. There’s a tiny spiral or a little turtle on a receipt. There’s a pair of pants that button. There’s a warm cup of tea to drink, there’s a sock and a warm foot. Our existence is these tiny moments, strung together against the dark of night.
Make something.
When I was in grad school, I took up baking cookies as a way to make friends in the department really quick. A professor told me that during HER PhD she had also taken up baking as a way of keeping sane. A dissertation takes forever to write, you can sit at the computer for hours with no result, and it’s painful to think about. Baking, however! In a few hours you have actual material results. You can touch it, smell it, eat it. Nom.
This is a huge part of why I love weight training AND housecleaning. Quantifiable work, visible result.
there is literally not a single thing in these posts that is inherently incompatible with nihilism
I mean these are almost word for word EXAMPLES of existential nihilism
There are several reasons why not. For one thing, the authors do not agree and actively spurn the notion of Nihilism. That in and of itself is disagreement with existential nihilism’s conclusion that there is no meaning in the universe. You could argue that finding their own meaning is an example of existential nihilism, but they are not finding their own individual meaning but sharing examples of how they keep their sanity/find purpose as a shared meaning, which is against contrary to the root ideas of nihilism.
If the shared philosophy stated above could be anything, I’d argue it’s actually Absurdism, which is all about raging against cosmic midnight, holding tiny lights against the infinite dark and, accurately, completely, declaring victory for all time.
being vulnerable enough to tell people how much you care about them is infinitely more brave than pretending to be above love and using edginess as a method of self-preservation
yes of course it is more brave, but being vulnerable is really hard so if you’re not there yet then that’s okay. not everyone can allow themselves to be vulnerable
“You can criticize something you love!”
Yeah, and you can also get tired of criticizing something you love. You can get completely fed up with it and decide, “You know what? Flaws aside, I love this thing, and I don’t have to waste hours of my life admitting its flaws to strangers on the Internet in order to somehow justify my love of it.” You can get sick of watching others gleefully tear it apart, for no reason other than that it’s popular and they hate that you love it. You can get sick of watching others tearing it apart with good intentions, too.
In the end, it’s just a cartoon, or a book, or a movie. It’s not that serious, and you can enjoy it without hyper-focusing on its flaws. You don’t need to justify your love of something to someone else, least of all a person you don’t even know.
